Carrie Dorsey Park Family Photos | Sykesville, MD Family Photographer

Every photographer has those locations that they somehow stumble across and immediately think, “Why have I never been here before?”

For me, that place is Carrie Dorsey Park in Sykesville, Maryland.

I actually found this location because a friend who’s also a photographer (thanks Kerry!) shared it with me. I’m always interested in finding new places for family photos, so I had to check it out. And once I did, I knew I’d be back.

Carrie Dorsey Park is a little different from some of the more obvious family photography locations in Carroll County. It has a little bit of everything: a pond, a stream, wooded areas, walking paths, and plenty of beautiful natural light.

And you know me, I love a location with good light. If you’ve read any of my other location posts, you’ve probably figured out that good light is one of my biggest priorities when I’m choosing a spot for family photos. The combination of open space and trees to filter the harsher sun allows for beautifully lit images throughout the session. There are areas where we can take advantage of the open light, as well as spots where the trees soften the sunlight and create a really pretty, even glow. It gives me plenty of flexibility to move around and create a variety of images while still keeping that soft, natural look that I love.

One of my favorite things about Carrie Dorsey Park is the variety. There’s the pond, which gives us a completely different backdrop from the wooded areas. There’s a creek and walking paths, and the woods provide a little more shade and a completely different feel.

And then there are the little things you don’t necessarily expect. I once saw an oriole while I was here, which was pretty amazing. It’s the only time I’ve ever seen one in real life! I’m not sure the kids I photograph are quite as impressed by birds as I am, but I always appreciate a location where you might see something unexpected. There are also beavers (which again, I had never seen in the wild!) and of course deer, bunnies, rabbits, all kinds of wildlife!

I can’t write about Carrie Dorsey Park without mentioning this. The parking situation is…unique.

You arrive and park near the old abandoned part of Springfield hospital complex, which is not exactly the most inviting introduction to a family photography location. 😂 If you’re expecting a pretty little park entrance with a big sign and a picturesque parking lot, this isn’t quite that.

But once you get past the parking situation and actually walk into the park, it’s a completely different story. So yes, the entrance might make you question your photographer’s location choice for approximately two minutes. But I promise there’s a reason I keep coming back. A short walk away from the parking lot, and you’ll understand!

I photograph families throughout Sykesville, Eldersburg, Westminster, and the surrounding Carroll County area. My family sessions are relaxed and natural, with a combination of lightly posed portraits and plenty of opportunities for the kids to interact and be themselves.

If you’re looking for family photos in Sykesville, Carrie Dorsey Park is one of the locations I’m always happy to return to.
